1st Bi-annual International Soy for Human Health Conference 2019 – 11-13 March 2019
AFRICAN SOY RESEARCH ASSOCIATION (ASRA) — 2018-05-02
First announcement and call for papers
This is the first announcement for the SOYHH conference to be held in March 2019 at the Saint George Hotel & Conference Centre in Irene, Pretoria close to OR Tambo International Airport, South Africa.
The Centre of Sustainable Livelihoods (CSL) at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) in collaboration with the Oil and Protein Seed Development Trust & Oilseeds Advisory Committee (OAC) hosted the first four Soy Seminars and Workshops from 2013 to 2016. The objective of hosting these seminars and workshops was in line with the CSL vision of bringing together soy producers and processors, as well as academia and other soy stakeholders to moderate discussions on how stakeholders can all work together to advance human soy consumption in Africa. This can be done through evidence-based and practical information on the role of soy in providing food to support health and soy food product development to soy processors and food producers from South Africa and the greater African continent. This opportunity was also used to showcase the soy industry in South Africa in leading the technological aspect of the programme.
Papers and posters within the following themes are invited for presentation at the conference:
Agriculture – soy production strategies and techniques
Food Security – the role of soy in addressing food insecurity
Human Nutrition – the role of soy in under- and over nutrition
Guidelines and instructions
Proposals for presentation of papers at the SOYHH will be in the form of a 200-300 word abstract – submitted on the prescribed form – with a clear title of presentation, author/s of the paper, an indication of the theme within which the paper should be considered and contact details of submitting presenter. Click on the respective links below to download the necessary document and forms:
The Protein Research Foundation aims to promote increased locally produced protein for animal consumption to reduce the imports of such protein, mainly in the form of soya oilcake.
In 2014, South Africa succeeded, for the first time, to produce more soya oilcake locally than imported oilcake.
The graph clearly shows the growth of the South African soya industry from 2010, particularly the very positive contribution since 2014. The soya industry believes that this positive trend is sustainable for several more years.
Local vs Imported Soybean Meal
