The Canola Research Hub translates agronomy research findings into tangible on-farm practices that result in great productivity and profitability – TOP SCIENCE FOR THE BOTTOM LINE.
This database currently includes the results of all 31 studies under the Canola/Flax Agri-Science Cluster of Growing Forward 1. The Hub's content and capabilities will continue expanding to include results of all projects under GROWING FORWARD 2, as they're finalized, and recommendations on best production practices gleaned from over 50 years of study. It will showcase agronomic research that grower dollars have contributed to throughout the years.

On 12 March 2015, Wessel van Wyk, a Protein Research Foundation (PRF) contractor and soybean scientist, was honoured as "Speaker of the Year at the Ottosdal Conference". Landbouweekblad sponsored the trophy and prize money. The title of Wessel van Wyk's paper was, "Sukses met sojabone begin met planttyd" (Soybean success starts at planting time). His paper described five factors that are considered the most important components at planting time. These factors are proper inoculation, proper weed control, proper plant technique (that includes row widths, plant density, planter speed, planting depth and planting time), fertilising and tilling.

Dit is vir die PNS (Proteïennavorsingstigting) en die OAK (Oliesade Advieskomitee) baie aangenaam om aan te kondig dat die eerste uitgawe van die nuwe kwartaallikse oliesadetydskrif, Oilseeds Focus, tydens 'n funksie op 16 April 2015 bekendgestel was. Die Oilseeds Focus kan hier afgelaai word.
Canola is at present only produced in the Western Cape Province of South Africa and for the first time ever exceeded 120 000 tonnes of grain produced per annum during the 2014 production season. This was done on 95 000 hectares which are however still considerably less than the estimated 743 500 hectares which, according to a recent research survey, are regarded as suited to canola production in the Western Cape Province. Abiding the recommended crop rotations for good management practices it is for this reason the aim of the Protein Research Foundation to at least double the area under production in this area in future by focussing on higher grain yields and improved profit margins. At the same time, the production of canola under irrigation in the northern parts of South Africa will also receive attention.

According to these estimates, the largest soybean harvest is expected in the Mpumalanga province at 348 000 tonnes (37%), followed by the Free State at 310 000 tonnes (33%), KwaZulu-Natal at 84 000 tonnes (9%), Limpopo at 72 000 tonnes (8%) and Gauteng at 54 000 tonnes (6%). The remaining provinces represent 70 350 tonnes (7%).

Speculations about the nutritional value of soy has been going around, but with 8 amino acids needed for human health all contained in that one small bean, how can one still doubt?
Although soy is a plant protein, researchers have found that small adjustments made to the digestibility and other metabolic factors of this "meat in the field", the protein content can be compared with those found in cow's milk and chicken eggs. This small bean is also packed with Vitamins A, B6, B12, C, D, Magnesium, Iron and Calcium. With the nutritional value in mind, it is interesting to see that 85% of the world's soybeans are processed or crushed into oil and meal. Of this crushed meal, a further 95% is processed into animal feed, according to www.soyatech.com.
Only a mere 2% are processed into soy flours and protein.
These statistics open the field for the use of soybeans for human consumption. Soy meal can be processed and used in extrusion to manufacture high protein ready-to-eat porridge or breakfast cereal that can assist countries in malnutrition and food security.
Dr David Bowran, a scientific leader within the canola industry, shed some light on problems growing canola in windy areas:
"... to plant shorter cultivars that branch more in the upper part of the canopy. They interwine better, which reduces the pods rattling around, and there is less shattering".
